The Sanctuary of Meadows

The sanctuary of nature brought back into your living environments. Instead of just "escaping" to nature, let's invite her to be everywhere that we are.

We are inviting nature back into our spaces. Turning to nature and remembering her ways. Great change starts with a seed: An act as insignificant as throwing seeds onto barren ground. A small act, with almost no immediate result. But nature knows what to do, and as we re-learn her ways, we will start remembering what change can look like, what our world can look like. And, excitingly, we can start feeling like we can make a difference in this world. This is about transforming our world, one meadow at a time.

“We need acts of restoration, not only for polluted waters and degraded lands, but also for our relationship to the world. We need to restore honor to the way we live, so that when we walk through the world we don’t have to avert our eyes with shame, so that we can hold our heads up high and receive the respectful acknowledgment of the rest of the earth’s beings.”

Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass

Less Lawns

Lawns, I am convinced, are a symptom of, and a metaphor for, our skewed relationship to the land.” - Michael Pollan. At Huckleberry Meadows we are not actually encouraging you to abandon your lawn. We are encouraging what is called permaculture over monoculture. We believe that you can keep the pieces of your lawn that your family loves to enjoy most, and return the rest of it to beautiful native-scaped scenery, sure to delight human, bird, bee and butterfly. Inviting nature back into our suburban and city lives is, to us, a crucial step toward positive change. By inviting nature back into our lives, we are inviting new vibrancy, natural sensations, and old life vibrations. This is about memory, memories of meadows, and the way things once were.

Meadowscaping services

Guerilla meadowscaping

A tiny act can make great waves of change. We want to remind the world of the power that choice can have, especially when we all start acting together. That’s why we want to equip you with our “Guerrilla” native blend - a portable shaker that fits perfectly in your bag, and can go anywhere with you. As you pass by sad and desolate landscapes, we want you to make that tiny difference: Shake that little shaker filled with native wildflowers over that sad land. Make it a practice, do it each day. With time, and with all of us joining in on the guerrilla shaking… Can you imagine how our environments could transform?

Remember: The same power we have to take away from and destroy nature is the same power we have to give back and regenerate her!

Blends for every taste

We believe that everyone has the right to delight in their own gardens. Your gardens should be the way you dream them of being. While many insist you should go “native” or “xeriscaped”, we suggest doing whatever gives you the most delight. We as a people have the most miraculous ability of “ecosystem engineering”, and it is that very ability that should allow us to reconnect with nature, instead of pushing her out of our systems. To further our philosophy, we find that if you choose to meadoscape with diversity instead of lawns or thirsty annuals, you’ll actually be saving more water over time. Nature is not a field of gravel and rock, nature is diverse and beautiful. As a result of this philosophy, we pledge to provide the most wonderful, whimsical and fitting seed blends for precisely the diverse meadow that you’re looking for. We are just barely getting started, and we hope you’ll follow along for when your perfect blend becomes available. Have ideas for us? Please reach out! We’d be delighted to work with you.

Natural materials for packaging only, always

I was at Home Depot the other day… Enjoying an impressive array of perennials and food crop. When I came across a plastic container of native wildflower seeds. How bizarre, I thought to myself, that they would choose plastic to facilitate bio-diversity. At Huckleberry meadows we stand against the use of fossil fuels in every way that we possibly can. We aren’t perfect, but I can tell you right now, we will NEVER package seeds in plastic. Glass and recycled paper will forever be our stance.
